1. About Hohai University

Hohai University is a state key university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education of China, and is on the State “211 Project”. It is a comprehensive university with research and study of water resources as its main focus, education of engineering subjects as its first priority, and coordinated development of a wide array of disciplines, ranking among China's top universities in its teaching indexes and overall strength. For more than a hundred years, the University has developed and grown in the struggle process of governing water and rejuvenating the country. It is known as "the cradle of cultivating high-level innovative and entrepreneurial talents in water conservancy and an important base for water conservancy scientific and technological innovation". The University is located in the Yangtze River Delta region with the most active economic development, the highest degree of openness, and the strongest innovation ability in China. It has Xikang Road Campus, Jiangning Campus, and Changzhou Campus in Nanjing City and Changzhou City. The University is one of the first batch of universities authorized to grant doctoral, master's, and bachelor's degrees to foreign students. It has cultivated thousands of talents of various types for more than 100 countries and regions.

2. Graduation and Degree Awarding

Graduate international students should have a good international perspective in their respective disciplines, be able to apply and develop knowledge, skills and methods in their fields on a global scale, and possess competitive capabilities in international affairs. The standard length of schooling for master's students is set to 3 years (no less than 2 years & no more than 5 years), and the standard one for doctoral students is set to 4 years (no less than 3 years & no more than 6 years).

Those who have completed all courses stipulated in the academic plan and passed all the exams and thesis defense shall be awarded the graduate diploma. Those who pass the degree examination shall be awarded the corresponding academic degree. According to the relevant regulations of the Ministry of Education, China, graduate students taught in English should reach level 3 of <Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for Speakers of Other Languages>

3. Application Requirements

(1)Applicants must be a citizen of a country other than the People's Republic of China, and be in good health both mentally and physically.

(2)Applicants must be a bachelor's degree holder under the age of 35 when applying for master's programs and be a master's degree holder under the age of 40 when applying for doctoral programs.

4. Majors and Disciplines

In 2025, 19 doctoral and 27 master's programs taught in English are available for international students.

5. Application Documents

(1)Copy of Passport Home Page. If the validity of the applicant's current passport does not meet the requirement (meaning the passport expires before September 2025), please apply for a new passport before submitting the application;

(2)Notarized highest diploma. Prospective diploma winners must submit official proof of student status by their current school. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized Chinese or English translations;

(3)Academic transcripts (from the undergraduate program onwards). Copies of academic records from first to last semester during the undergraduate, graduate (if any), and doctoral programs (if any) shall be provided. These transcripts shall be issued and sealed by the attending university's academic affairs office, graduate school, or student management department. They can be in Chinese or English, but must be attached with notarized English translations if they are in foreign languages other than English;

(4)Language qualification certificates. Non-English native speakers shall provide English language proficiency certificates, like IELTS or TOFEL report;

(5)A study plan proposal. A study plan in English or in Chinese should include the academic background, study and work experiences, and focus on research plans during graduate studies. About 1500 words for a master's applicant and 3000 words for a PhD applicant, the proposal of a doctoral student shall be signed by the applicant's Chinese supervisor. (6)Recommendation letters. Two letters of recommendation (written only in Chinese or English) from professors or associate professors shall be submitted with the references' signatures and personal contact information. (7)A photocopy of the Foreigner Physical Examination Form completed in English (the original copy shall be kept by the applicant). The form is designed by the Chinese quarantine authority and can be obtained from the dispatching authority. The physical examinations must cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital, or a sealed photograph of the applicants are invalid. (8)Non-criminal record report. The applicant shall submit a valid certificate of Non-Criminal Record issued by the local public security authority, usually issued within 6 months prior to the submission date of the application;

(9)Curriculum vitae. Consecutive study experiences since undergraduate. Full study experience is required for those who have studied in China;

(10)Scanned copies of the China related visa and residence permit, including all the study experiences. Upload your passport instead if there isn't any;

(11)Financial proof.Either the family deposit certificate, property certificate, or parent/guardian income certificate, over $5000 is suggested;

(12)Catalogue and abstract of published papers, if there is any;

Note:

(1) Uploaded supporting documents must be clear, authentic and valid. Applicants are recommended to use a professional device to scan the relevant documents. Applicants shall bear the consequences caused by unclear or unidentifiable uploaded materials.

(2) Applicants should ensure the telephone number on the application form is reachable and the email address is correct. If the documents are incomplete, the University reserves the right to request additional supplementary materials from the applicant.

6. Application Period

From now until April 10, 2025.

Application for scholarships will be processed according to the schedules of different scholarships respectively.

7. Application Procedures

(1) Applicants should log in to the Hohai University online application system at http://admission.hhu.edu.cn/ to register an account, fill in the information, upload the relevant application materials, and pay the 400RMB application fee, which is not refunded regardless the applicant is admitted or not.

(2) Applicants can track the application status online. Please pay attention to the email for important information sent by the University, such as requests for supplementary materials and interviews.

8. Scholarships

(1) Chinese Government Scholarship

(a) Bilateral Program (Type A)

The Chinese Government Scholarship Bilateral Program is a scholarship awarded through cooperation and exchange agreements, or mutual understanding, between the Chinese government and the governments or institutions of other countries.

Applicants should apply from the local Chinese Embassy or Consulate and fill in Hohai University as the first choice. Hohai University doesn't accept this type of application directly, while a pre-admission can be provided for the qualified candidate to facilitate the application.

(b) Chinese University Program (Type B)

Applicants need to complete both the China Scholarship Council and Hohai University online applications, respectively at http://studyinchina.csc.edu.cn/ (Agency Number: 10294) and http://admission.hhu.edu.cn/.

Chinese government scholarship is subject to an annual evaluation regulation. It's up to the annual review result whether the candidate will be continuously sponsored. After being awarded the Scholarship, recipients are not allowed to change the university, major or duration of their study.

(2) Hohai University Scholarship

Hohai University scholarship is annually reviewed based on the candidate's academic results, research and comprehensive performances. The scholarship will be updated each academic year.

(a)The first-class scholarship includes tuition, on-campus accommodation, comprehensive medical insurance and monthly stipend.

(b)The second-class scholarship includes tuition and on-campus accommodation.

(c)The third-class scholarship includes tuition.

9. Charge and Refund Policy

(1)Application fee: 400RMB

(3)Accommodation fee: 9600-24,000RMB/year subject to different conditions on Xikang Road Campus (single room), 12,000RMB/year on Jiangning Campus (single room), 7200RMB/year/bed on Changzhou Campus (double room).

Tuition and accommodation fees are only paid in RMB. 70% of the tuition can be refunded and the accommodation fee will be calculated accordingly if the student quits within 2 weeks of the registration date. The refunds shall be settled in RMB. Anyone who requests to withdraw from the university has to submit a hard copy of an application and return the invoice. No refund after 2 weeks. The expelled students, due to violation of school rules and regulations, will not get any refund.

International students must apply for comprehensive medical insurance of RMB 800/year in accordance with relevant national regulations and requirements of the university.Otherwise, they will not be registered.

10. Selection, Admission and Announcement

(1)International School will conduct a preliminary review of the applicant's materials in accordance with the order of application

(2)The respective Colleges/Schools will review the submitted materials, including a comprehensive evaluation of applicants' academic achievements, research capabilities, and development potential, and recommend the best.

(3)The university will organize experts to assess the candidates recommended by each college and determine the list of students to be admitted.

(4)From the end of June 2025 those who are admitted can download the Admission Notice from the Online Application System. The download link of the Confirmation Form for Study in China (JW201/202) will be sent to the applicant's email. The students should download and print these documents by themselves.

11. On Campus Dormitory

The master's and doctoral students are accommodated on campus according to the overall layout of the University. Dormitory facilities include a bed, desk, closet, chair, water heater, internet access, toilet and public laundry room.

12. Visa Application and Registration

Those who are admitted shall bring the passport, the Admission Notice, the Confirmation Form for Study in China (Form JW201/202) and other necessary documents to the local Chinese Embassy or Consulate to apply for a student visa (X1) to China. The applicant shall bring all the above materials and register at Hohai University within the appointed time and place on the Admission Notice.

The student's information and materials will be reviewed again by the University. The admission will be canceled if the applicant:

1. Having not obtained the required diploma/degree;

2. Having violated any discipline;

3. Being dishonesty or fraud;

4. Having registered at other universities at the same time.
